Alice ‘Alcatraz’ Carruthers,
London-based Illustrator specialising in comic art.
Formidable GIMPressionist, lover of literature, creator of comics.

WHY ALCATRAZ?
Because ALICE + CARRUTHERS = ALCATRAZ, obviously.
“I originally conceived of Alcatraz as my street name. Of course, I never made it to the streets, so I adopted it as a pseudonym for my ‘artist persona’. I reasoned that it would make me seem mysterious and enigmatic; being anonymous would enable me to create without my audience being able to rest on preconceptions about my identity. But I never withheld my identity, so now it’s kind of confusing and I’ve already paid for the website address and my Instagram’s under ‘alcatrazillustrations’, and I swear I’ve come up with cooler names since but it’s locked in now so there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Expertizes
Where I was Educated
BA English Literature with Creative Writing
Lancaster University, 2011 – 2014
First Class
MA Illustration and Visual Media
UAL London College of Communication, 2019 – ongoing
What I Can Do
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
GIMP
I actually create most of my artwork in GIMP because I don’t want to have to pay for software. I claim this to be a point of principle, but it might just be because I’m cheap.

What I Actually Do
I make digitally edited line art illustrations and cartoons inspired by, well, everything. Everything and anything.
I also independently produce my own comics. This medium allows me to combine writing with illustration, which is really what I like to make.
What I Can Do For You
